Cube spatial, 2017
Marie-Eve Martel (Blainville)
A strange spaceship or temple in the shape of a cube seems to have landed in town. The cube, a widely used symbol in mysticism and mathematics, has long been a source of fascination and mystery. Steeped in symbolism, the work gives way to an imaginary world hidden within, somewhere between the organic and the geometric. By peering through the “magic eye”, spectators may discover a hybrid city partially integrating the outside world while multiplying its own reflections in disorienting views.
This artwork was produced and presented for PASSAGES INSOLITES in 2017, 2018 et 2019.
Marie-Eve Martel is interested in the materiality of the landscape, the ways humans inhabit space, and particularly how architecture impacts the human imagination and behaviours. The iconic sites that she transforms and reinterprets with drawings, paintings, prints and sculptures take on a mythical aura. Martel holds a master’s degree in Visual and Media Arts from UQAM and is a recipient of grants from the CALQ, the CAC and the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation. Exhibited in numerous artist-run spaces and galleries in Quebec and across Canada, her work is held in major collections such as the City of Montreal, Loto-Québec, and the Government of Yukon.
