Fannie Giguère (Quebec City, Quebec)
Elsewhere is a play on optics that pays tribute to barrier-grid animation, an ancient technique that creates the illusion of movement with still images scrolling behind a simple grid. The mechanism is activated when a passer-by turns the crank to reveal a visual haiku consisting of a bird in flight, a blinking eye and a swimmer doing the breaststroke. The device is paired with a delicate soundtrack of ringing chimes triggered by the movement.
With an intimate approach fundamentally turned towards the Other, the video artist Fannie Giguère creates interactive installations intended to challenge the viewer in a playful manner. Both an artist and a teacher, she has been actively involved in the Quebec arts community for over a decade. Her works have been presented in numerous group shows and events in Quebec, Rimouski and Montreal. She had also participated in film festivals in Quebec, Canada, China and the United States. Giguère is the recipient of grants from the CALQ and Première Ovation.
