I Am the Light, 2021
Ulrika Sparre (Stockholm, Suède)
Lightboxes with short poetic messages have been placed all around Quebec City, a literary circuit for you to explore as you stroll through town. These lyrical incursions into unexpected places enliven the urban landscape with charming but cryptic statements – “I am your only answer” or “I will wait here under the stars” – which manage to be intimate yet evasive. Rich in multiple meanings, they remain open to interpretation.
The philosophical excerpts inspire existential contemplation and invite passersby to sink into an introspective reverie. Appearing seemingly out of nowhere and bearing enigmatic messages, they cast an aura of mystery over our experience of the city. By drawing on urban advertising equipment that normally carries commercial messages, Ulrika Sparre has reappropriated an area of the public space with great sensitivity.
Ulrika Sparre lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden. Her work uses text and image in performative ways to explore the nature of human behaviour. She holds a BFA from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and an MFA from Konstfack University in Stockholm, Sweden. Sparre’s work has been exhibited in South Africa, Greece, Iran, Iceland, the Czech Republic, and Italy at such institutions as the Index Foundation (Stockholm), the LÁ Art Museum (Hveragerõi, Iceland), the Planetarium (Athens) and OpenArt Biennial (Örebro, Sweden).
