Rising Waters, 2021
Théâtre Rude Ingénierie (Québec, Québec)
A mysterious village lies submerged in the waters of Bassin Louise. The steeple and two roofs protruding from the water suggest that a church and two houses lie underwater. How did this hamlet come to be? Was it half-sunk by rising waters or purpose-built in these shallows by aquatic creatures?
A plume of smoke, a gently ringing bell, a light in the window: small signs of life suggest the village is still inhabited – but by whom? The buildings seem intact and well-maintained. Vegetables are growing in the floating garden. With Rising Waters, Théâtre Rude Ingénierie has imagined a serene tableau of time come to a standstill and a calm, tide-swept life.
