Hope 2.0 (2022)
Sébastien Giguère (Quebec City, Quebec)

The oversized replica of a BBQ lighter was erected at the end of a wharf just like a lighthouse. Hand built by the artist and bearing the Hopeâ brand, the lighter seems destined to burn a flame for the collective hope we cling to in times of uncertainty. The work is a call to the urgent need to act and to rekindle the fire needed to effect change.
Sébastien Giguère creates inventive sculptures that reimagine daily life with a dash of whimsy, articulating a poetry of the everyday that cheekily embraces the superficiality of the worldly. With the BGL collective (dissolved in 2021), he has taken part in biennials Havana, Ushuaïa, Quebec City, and Montreal, and represented Canada at the Venice Biennial.
