The MOBA (Museum of Bad Art) features a collection like no other in the world: the crème de la crème of art that is just “too bad to be ignored,” with curators travelling far and wide in search of work that is serious in intent but lacking in execution. The mostly anonymous paintings in Espace 400e are classified and exhibited according to conventional museum standards. The exhibition rooms cover all traditional genres, from history painting to portraiture to the conventional genre scene to the still life. Works are arranged in a unique perspective that accentuates their irregularities – including accidental doppelgangers, hilarious animal portraits, and clashing symbolism. Written with a light but mordant touch, the description of each work analyzes its imagery and style to pinpoint the source of its endearing badness.
Curators : Michael Frank (curator in chief), Louise Reilly Sacco, (executive director).
The Museum of Bad Art is a non-profit community institution based in Somerville, near Boston, MA, that has worked since 1994 to celebrate and preserve bad art in all its forms. It now boasts over 600 works acquired at garage sales and thrift stores, donated by their creators, or fished out of the trash. MOBA’s collection of the some of the world’s worst art has been shown internationally in special events and traveling exhibitions, attracting press attention from Harvard and Smithsonian magazines, The Boston Globe, The Independent and The New York Times, among others.
