Radical Nature, 2023
Baptiste Debombourg (France)

Somewhere between the Stone Age and our contemporary leisure society, anachronistic vehicles are scattered throughout the neighbourhood. You’re free to climb on, but good luck achieving forward movement: the Flintstones-style quad, personal watercraft, and all-terrain vehicle are literally set in stone. This raw, inert mineral material lends a paradoxical monumentality to these vehicles that symbolize the human power to impose ourselves on the natural environment for recreational pleasure.
Baptiste Debombourg’s sculptural work examines human relationships both between people and with the objects that shape our daily lives. His work has been shown in Europe, Asia, and North America, and included in major public art events such as Voyage à Nantes, Un été au Havre, and the OPENART biennial in Örebro.
