The Era of the American Dream, 2023
Jasmin Bilodeau (Quebec)

The spectral outline of a pioneer house stands in contrast with the urban landscape. This blurred sculpture creates an illusion of visual vibration, even a third dimension, though it is in fact flat and static. In a stark juxtaposition of form and materials, the pioneer log cabin is made of space-age aluminum, and appears tiny before the urban landscape surrounding it. The work pays tribute to the vernacular architecture of early settlers, celebrates our humble origins, and makes visible just how hazy our collective memory of the past may be.
To give his ideas physical form and presence, Jasmin Bilodeau uses basic materials and synthesizes images down to their essence. With the BGL collective (formed in 1996), he has exhibited in Nuit Blanche festivals in Toronto, Paris, and Calgary, and internationally in the Havana, Ushuaïa, Quebec City, Montreal, and Venice biennials. In 2021, Jasmin Bilodeau embarked on a solo career and is now represented by Chiguer Art Contemporain in Quebec City.
