The Judgment, 2023
Cooke-Sasseville (Quebec)

As individuals, we are too often blamed for contemporary social ills ranging from political discord to environmental destruction. The Judgment incarnates this feeling of personal guilt before the evils afflicting society with the use of augmented reality: coloured hands surround the viewer, each pointing a finger in an over-the-top choreography of blame. One cannot escape this disembodied jury that mercilessly hands down its sentence, rather than lending a hand to collective actions that might help address such pressing issues.
Copresented with Les Productions Recto-Verso as part of l’Espace suspendu, an augmented reality circuit.
Jean-François Cooke and Pierre Sasseville have been working together since 2000 as Cooke-Sasseville. Their work delights in paradox, confronting us with situations that destabilize by both their ambivalence and astonishing lucidity. The duo has taken part in national and international exhibitions and created many monumental public artworks, including La Rencontre at Place Jean Béliveau (Centre Videotron).
